By Dave Oneegs Aussie Chat

“The bank announced on Monday morning that employees will be able to take six weeks of paid leave or up to 12 months unpaid leave as they “undergo any aspect of gender affirmation including social, medical, and legal gender affirmation”.

Here’s what others had to say:

Brett
Six weeks leave for shopping ,make up and self affirmation.

I wonder if they will provide the same policy for people detransitioning… or does inclusion only work one way?

Jay21
They can do what they like. We will go around them

Hector McGregor
Go to your boss and tell him/ her/ it that you don’t know if you are Arthur or Martha. Six weeks off to ponder the decision, then come back and claim you are still undecided. Six more weeks in the tank.

Suzan Dawson
Fair dinkum, this agenda is way out of control.

E W
Also does gender affirmation work if you want to affirm the gender you were born with?
“Yes I am still a woman. Off to buy a dress. See you in 6 weeks”

paul kingston
What if I’m male and I affirm being male … does that count?

PAOLA
Oh dear GOD they are really pulling out all the stops to see who is the most WOKE!,

Tamas
Leave the bank, take your business elsewhere and watch how quick they drop the policy.

Sam
Meanwhile I haven’t worked my hospital job since November 1st because of these bullshit mandates.

Every single bank employee needs to claim this leave. If they question it, scream at them that they’re transphobic. Watch them then drop this ridiculous policy.

Cathy
Coles announced similar recently. Maybe people need to apply for gender affirmation leave so they can affirm they are the gender they were born as. If it doesn’t get approved is that discrimination?

ANZ Bank introduces six weeks of paid Gender Affirmation Leave for employees in Australia and New Zealand

The major Australian bank outlined the three processes employees would need to satisfy to be eligible for the leave.

The ANZ Bank is introducing a new scheme allowing staff in Australia and New Zealand to take paid leave while they are affirming their gender.

The bank announced on Monday morning that employees will be able to take six weeks of paid leave or up to 12 months unpaid leave as they “undergo any aspect of gender affirmation including social, medical, and legal gender affirmation”.

“There are many ways an individual can affirm their gender, and the extended leave recognises the process needs time and is not the same for everyone,” ANZ said in a statement on Monday.

ANZ defined examples of gender-affirming processes, which they said could include:

  • Social affirmation (for example: adopting the dress and style of presentation that better aligns with their gender identity and expression, changing their pronouns and/or name)
  • Medical affirmation (for example: surgery, hormone therapy or both, medical appointments, rest and recovery from medical procedures)
  • Legal affirmation (for example: legally changing their name and/or gender marker on personal identification documents such as passport, birth certificate, driver’s license or bank card).

ANZ’s Diversity and Inclusion Lead, Fiona MacDonald, said the move was another example of the bank’s “ongoing commitment to the LGBTIQ+ community” and is helping to work toward “creating an inclusive culture”.

“The six weeks of paid leave means people who are affirming their gender do not need to exhaust their annual or sick leave entitlements, while also easing some of the financial pressures,” she said.

“This is especially important as research shows that trans and gender diverse people are more likely to experience lower incomes and employment rates,” Ms MacDonald said.

ANZ Bank is introducing a new scheme allowing staff who are affirming their gender to take extra leave.

The move by ANZ follows on from other Australian companies introducing similar schemes.

Last month, Coles supermarket announced that their team members undergoing gender affirmation will now be entitled to up to 10 days paid gender affirmation leave.

The retail giant said the policy change was an important step in its commitment to champion inclusion in the workplace.

“We know that we have at least 900 team members who identify as transgender or gender diverse,” Coles Chief Legal and Safety Officer and chair of the Coles Pride Steering Committee David Brewster said.
